About the School
Education geared to achieving career success is the aim of our business courses. Our School of Business offers a 'generic' business management course and a degree which focuses on the needs of the food and agribusiness sector, the world's premier industry. Our degrees are tailored to the needs of industry, with electives in year three allowing some specialisation. Regular employer liaison aims to ensure that you receive the relevant training required in today's competitive marketplace, thus placing you ahead in the job-race.
The Courses
The BSc (Hons) Business Management (International Food and Agribusiness) course offers the chance to combine all the elements found in more general business studies courses with the opportunity to specialise and gain a broad understanding of food and agribusiness issues. Year one includes a module on food and agriculture and one on languages, while the other six modules focus on business.
If you select the BSc (Hons) Business Management course, there is a grounding in general business and management (including a language) with the opportunity to study particular business themes in depth. In year two, apart from studying taught modules, you will complete a 20-week work placement, which strengthens your experience and attractiveness to employers.
There is also an introduction to research in preparation for the dissertation in year three and a study tour in the International Business module. In year three, you will study a core of subjects and choose two electives, allowing specialisation, and can further focus on your specific interests by selecting the topic for independent study leading to a dissertation. As a result, career opportunities can vary from a role in the City as a commodity trader or analyst to food retailing and buying, supply chain and production management and many other general business orientated areas, such as HR, finance, marketing or strategy.
We also encourage youto start your own business during the work placement and in the entrepreneurship module. This has allowed some students togo on and successfully launch their own companies. Strong links with industry continuously help to shape the design, teaching and examination of all our business courses.
